Actively Paranormal Cross

by King Sheep on October 19, 2012 at 3:05 pm
Posted In: Blog, humor, movie reviews, updates

Crosses are ‘actively paranormal’ as divine symbols and/or vampire repellents, which isn’t true for surnames, as in Alex Cross (Rotten Tomatoes – Metacritic).

“The 6’5″ Perry’s most believable moment is when his character has to reach something from a high shelf. That feels real.” Nell Minow Beliefnet

Do they give awards for Best Height?

“If I hadn’t had to stay awake, I would have slept though the whole thing. At home.” Wesley Morris Boston Globe

Translation: It’s best seen with your eyes closed.

“It’s a courageous but misguided move on Perry’s part; he has none of Freeman’s soulful, nuanced subtlety, and watching him display the gamut of emotions called for in Marc Moss and Kerry Williamson’s script is like watching the Hulk attempt Swan Lake.” Austin Chronicle Marc Savlov

Brawn Lake

“A movie that is almost as insane as its villain.”Matt Singer ScreenCrush

Somewhere, the plans of a mad genius have come to fruition!

“Alex Cross is more boring than your average weeknight procedural, except much longer, dumber and more violent.” The Playlist Drew Taylor

A thriller that gives you everything you’d expect while doing everything wrong is like ghosts haunting an abandoned building. If there’s no kooks to spook, what’s all this Paranormal Activity 4 (Rotten Tomatoes – Metacritic)?

“By part four, Schulman and Joost know what we’re expecting so they have a little fun with fakeouts, and throw in some iconography from other classic horror movies.” Fred Topel CraveOnline

It’s paranormal hacktivity.

“This entry in the series is the first time I’ve felt like they played it safe, and that’s a shame.” Drew McWeeny HitFix

Art is one arena where being safe is shit

“This once-innovative series rolls on without much regard for either plot or character development.” Justin Lowe Hollywood Reporter

So it’s all about the dialogue?

“Aside from the usual self-slamming doors and flying bodies, there are enough creepy kids and hiding knives to distract from a plot that’s increasingly mobile yet running on the spot.” Matthew Leyland Total Film

Speedy but stationary, animated yet still, or fast but frozen?

“Forgettable but well-executed, Paranormal Activity 4 gives you exactly what you’d expect and nothing more.” Anthony O’Connor FILMINK (Australia)

King Sheep doesn’t expect executions to be forgettable

Here Comes Argo The Sinister Smashed Psychopath

by King Sheep on October 12, 2012 at 4:12 pm
Posted In: Blog, humor, movie reviews, updates

Less accurate attacks, more stumbling, and the slim chance a bar’s neon allure will distract them, if you’re being chased by an evil psychopath, it’s better if they’re Smashed (Rotten Tomatoes – Metacritic).

“Ponsoldt, Paul and Winstead make a remarkably effective team for this film’s points and purposes, and Smashed burns long after it goes down smoothly.” The Playlist James Rocchi

Goes down smooth, hurts like fire. Half sales pitch, half warning.

“What’s new about the unsensationalized portrait of one-day-at-a-time progress (and setbacks) is the low-key energy of this drunks’ tale, by and for a generation with a high tolerance for humor and a low tolerance for soapiness.” Entertainment Weekly Lisa Schwarzbaum

Low tolerance for soap

“Smashed at its worst is still better than many other films of its kind at their best.” Michael Nordine Village Voice

Smashed is the Michael Jordan of drunk dramas.

“You won’t want to hit the bar afterward, but hey, maybe that’s a good thing.” Matt Patches Hollywood.com

Hey, maybe. Suddenly, having a beer sounds slightly Sinister (Rotten Tomatoes – Metacritic).

“The movie makes up for uneven dialogue and pacing issues through sheer horrific imagery.” indieWIRE Eric Kohn

If you want early Halloween scares, enjoy your treat, it’s no trick.

“One of the scariest horror movies I’ve seen in a long, long time.” William Bibbiani CraveOnline

If the quality lands between ‘best in a long time’ and ‘best in a long, long, long time,’ at what point does repetition become sarcastic?

“It whiffs on a horror film fundamental: Nobody seems to be all that scared.” Roger Moore McClatchy-Tribune News Service

Fundamental whiff

“‘Sinister’ is an undeniably scary movie, with performances adding enough human interest to give depth to the basic building blocks of horror.” Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times

It’s undeniably scary. Anyone want to deny Ebert: He Of The Upward Pointed Thumb?

“That title is off the mark. Here’s a better one: ‘Stupid.’” Soren Anderson Seattle Times

As long as we’re making up new titles, how about Argo (Rotten Tomatoes – Metacritic)?

“Just fantastic all around the board. Affleck paints a great picture, and I’ll tell you what. 1980’s Iran? Scarier than Jurassic Park. One of the best of the year, 4.5/5 Schmoes. Will be nominated for Best Picture.” Kristian Harloff Schmoes Know

Just about perfect, but not 5/5. Are actor-directors graded harder than director-actors?

“Ben Affleck is closing in on the perfect thriller. “Argo” shows us how near the mark he has gotten in just three films.” Roger Moore McClatchy-Tribune News Service

Three misses at perfect sounds like a good grouping.

“Argo is a triumph. It has tension, sincerity, mystery, artistic responsibility, entertainment value, technical expertise, a narrative arc and a thrilling respect for the tradition of how to tell a story with minimum frills and maximum impact.” Rex Reed New York Observer

Do more with less

“One part caper comedy and two parts edge-of-your-seat political thriller … an exhilarating theatrical experience.” Matt Patches Hollywood.com

One part alcohol metaphor, two parts awesome.

“It’s the kind of movie that wins Oscars, sure, but it’s also consistently entertaining and socially conscious without being heavy-handed.” Josh Bell Las Vegas Weekly

If Affleck wants to be heavy-handed, he should announce his next movie by yelling “Here Comes The Boom (Rotten Tomatoes – Metacritic).”

“Hands of stone meet heads of air in Here Comes the Boom, a sports story so daffy it may as well star Kevin James.” Variety John Anderson

Hands of stone vs. heads of air = head-poppingly bad.

“’Here Comes the Boom’ is enjoyable — or, at the very least, not torture like ‘Grown Ups’ …” James Rocchi MSN Movies

Put that blurb on the poster: See this movie, it’s “not torture!”

“’Rocky’ for fifth graders, with enough pro-school propaganda to make parents think it’s worth the price of popcorn.” Amy Nicholson Boxoffice Magazine

Popcorn propoganda

“The lesson Happy Madison should but will never learn is that there’s more to comedy than vomit and butt cracks.” Matt Pais RedEye

“This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.” Horace Walpole

“Despite the picture’s utter predictability, it is James’ sweet performance that makes this a winner. Hard to believe, but true!” David Kaplan Kaplan vs. Kaplan

Don’t sound so defensive. It’s not like Kevin James one of the Seven Psychopaths (Rotten Tomatoes – Metacritic).

“Martin McDonagh’s energetic follow up to his wildly humorous and thoughtful 2008 film “In Bruges” is a self-reflexive study in post-post-modern cinema.” Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com

It’s a self-aware reflection on post-modern meta-fiction. Wild.

“It’s a terrifically clever film, and just a joy to see masters such as Rockwell and Walken dive off various acting cliffs.” Clint O’Connor Cleveland Plain Dealer

Do actors need parachutes to pounce off pretend precipices?

“This flick never pretends to be anything but a bright hall of fun-house mirrors. And there, so gloriously distorted, gargoyles look right at home.” Rick Groen Globe and Mail

Abby Normal

“‘Seven Psychopaths’ is many things, chief among them a long-overdue love letter to Christopher Walken and a crudely drawn ransom note from Sam Rockwell.” Ty Burr Boston Globe

Example of a love letter/ransom note: Give me your heart or my heart dies!

“All great films are both fairy tales and confessionals, and when the two collide, what’s left beyond the crumple zone is magic.” Graham Killeen Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

King Sheep likes magic crumple zone movies

Day 6: Autumn Ranger

Continuing my limping reacquaintance with acrylic painting, I made a birthday present for my mom. She shared with me her love for fantasy and science-fiction as a child, and she is completely to blame for my love of Star Trek.

Also, without her guidance and unending encouragement, I would not have become the artist I am.

Happy Birthday, Mom.

Frankenweenie Takes Buttered VHS

by King Sheep on October 5, 2012 at 2:13 pm
Posted In: Blog, humor, movie reviews, updates

But what does a re-animated dog do with buttered cassettes? Nobody knows but Frankenweenie (Rotten Tomatoes – Metacritic).

“Darned near an instant classic.” Roger Moore McClatchy-Tribune News Service

Close only counts in horseshoes and handgrenades. And nuclear war. And Frankenweenie.

“Perfectly poised for a Halloween release, I daresay Frankenweenie is an instant classic.” Staci Layne Wilson Horror.com

I daresay multiple critics think classics can be instant.

“It’s not so much a miscalculation of his audience by Burton as it is a disregard. What lingers after Frankenweenie, far more than its stunning technique, is a sad suggestion of solipsism.” Philadelphia Inquirer David Hiltbrand

Happy suggestion of solipsism = America’s favorite amigo-maniac

“Even though it’s not among his best films, I’m just happy that Tim Burton has finally made a movie I can recommend to people again.” Austin Kennedy Sin Magazine

Movie pitch: On the Planet Of The Apes, Batman battles Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands. Elsewhere, Alice In Wonderland relives Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure searching for Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Sweeny Todd and Ed Wood catch a Big Fish, and Frankenweenie investigates The Corpse Bride of Sleepy Hollow who casts Dark Shadows. In the finale, Mars Attacks! and Batman Returns. Would you see this movie?

“Visually it’s so smart and inventive and downright beautiful that you want to stand up and cheer. Tim Burton’s imagination? IT’S ALIVE!” Hannah McGill The List

“This magnificent stop-motion cartoon is alive — “it’s alive! — with laughs and heart.” Pete Hammond Boxoffice Magazine

It’s alive and it’s everywhere! It might as well be Taken 2 (Rotten Tomatoes – Metacritic).

“Best enjoyed by those with short memories and a longing for needless excess.’ Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia)

The excess only feels pointless if it outlasts your attention span.

“It’s a stupid movie by smart people who aren’t smart enough to realize it’s stupid.” Boston Globe Wesley Morris

Doesn’t that make the smart people stupid?

“The moral of Taken 2? If you’re going on a family vacation, be sure that the human-trafficking ring you put out of business in that far more satisfying and suspenseful thriller from a few years ago doesn’t know how to find you.” Philadelphia Inquirer Steven Rea

Moral = always leave a note

“”Taken 2″ triples the budget of the original but not necessarily the entertainment.’ Jon Niccum Kansas City Star

Triple the budget = half the entertainment = bad math.

“While some viewers find the original Taken as a plotless Euro-thriller and other defend it as a modern action classic, Taken 2 is likely to please neither.” Stephen Carty Flix Capacitor

If you liked or hated the original, you’ll be disappointed, but if you didn’t see Taken, you might like the sequel. With logic like that, you’re better off asking margarine addicts why they don’t join team Butter (Rotten Tomatoes – Metacritic).

“There’s something about this film’s churn of goo and grit that lingers ambivalently, difficult to digest.” The Guardian Catherine Shoard

Goes down like melted butter and lands like a bucket of lard.

“With a razor-sharp script and Jennifer Garner winning laughs in a nice change-of-pace role, this cynically funny and pointedly pertinent not-so-subtle spin on the national battle between right and left wing politics scores lots of comic bullseyes.” Boxoffice Magazine Pete Hammond

Cutlery (razor-sharp), exercise (change-of-pace), and archery (comic bullseyes) are in the midst of a battle-metaphoroyale.

“Political satire requires a sure hand; this wink-wink attempt at milking the culture wars for comic commentary is downright butterfingered.” David Fear Time Out New York

Have a dairy good time

“Butter is a spectacularly entertaining film, a well written, perfectly paced comedy brought to life by one of the year’s best ensemble casts. It also functions as adept, timely political satire.” Jonathan Lack We Got This Covered

The success of the satire shouldn’t depend on personal politics.

“Garner hasn’t come across as amusing as she is here in quite some time. Despite many funny bits, Butter also, at times, seems to excoriate the blinkered Midwesterners in the flyover states.” Austin Chronicle Marjorie Baumgarten

Excoriate the blinkered = satirize the simple-minded, tongue-lash the thick-headed, and/or denounce the dimwits. It’s like shaming the elderly for preferring movies on V/H/S (Rotten Tomatoes – Metacritic).

“Even the title feels like a suggestion that you’re better off waiting to watch it at home.” Chris Hewitt (St. Paul) St. Paul Pioneer Press

If titles are suggestions, be wary of every other movie this week.

“Enough smart ideas and chilling moments to recommend it to fans of any of its multiple genres, but I would never suggest it to a general audience.”Brian Tallerico  HollywoodChicago.com

Translation: Good enough if you prefer the genre over the movie, but not a good movie.

“[Embodies] the whole found footage horror genre: there’s a few highlights, most of it doesn’t work at all, and after a while the ‘reality’ feels especially artificial.” William Bibbiani CraveOnline

On occasion, artificial reality rules

“What’s the point? None of the segments is particularly compelling. Strung together, it’s way too much of a muchness.” Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times

Should it have been less of a lessness?

“I would rather let Justin Bieber punch me in the face for a week than spend another two hours watching V/H/S.” Matt Pais RedEye

King Sheep hopes Bieber calls the bluff and tapes it
